2017-2018 Undergraduate Academic Catalog

A Message from President Jeff A. Weiss

Lesley University’s strong foundation of excellence began with our founder, Edith Lesley, in 1909.  We prepare socially responsible graduates with the knowledge, skills, understanding, and ethical judgment to be catalysts shaping a more just, humane, and sustainable world.  We do this by engaging you in transformative education that leads to meaningful careers and lifelong learning.

Our commitment to the liberal arts and sciences, education and the arts, career-focused field placements and internships in and around Greater Boston is central to our mission.  We intentionally integrate theory with practice and the classroom with the community.  Small classes allow you to establish the close student-faculty relationships that are a hallmark of a Lesley education; they create a supportive learning community that enhances your development and helps guide your academic progress.  Our award-winning faculty and highly skilled staff are dedicated to making your experience excellent.

Whether you serve your communities as an educator or school leader, environmentalist or entrepreneur, visual artist or writer, counselor or therapist, or in countless other ways, you carry with you the knowledge, discipline, and experience to help strengthen the lives of individuals, families, communities, and organizations.  Your experience will transcend our campus and permeate your neighborhoods in Cambridge, Boston, and beyond.

During your time at Lesley you will experience a vibrant, multicultural campus environment where respect for individual differences and choices, as well as diverse life experiences and perspectives, are reflected and celebrated.  You will have the academic and co-curricular resources of a comprehensive university coupled with all the advantages of an intimate undergraduate learning community.  This includes the resources at our two undergraduate colleges (the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the College of Art and Design), and extends to a wide array of courses, programs and events through our two graduate schools (the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences and the Graduate School of Education).  Outstanding internship and community service opportunities strengthen each student’s resume and contribute to the high job placement rates for Lesley graduates.  The wide variety of student clubs, the undergraduate student government, and our athletic teams provide a range of opportunities to get involved, develop leadership skills, and make lifelong friends.

Our superb location in Cambridge, next door to Harvard Square in the heart of America's premier college town, means that speakers, movies, theater, and a range of cultural organizations and events can enhance your college experience.

Over 86,000 highly accomplished and devoted alumni extend Lesley’s mission across the globe.  When you complete your degree you will join a cadre of alumni who are creative problem-solvers, highly qualified professionals, and engaged citizens who are active in their workplaces and communities and are striving daily to improve the lives of others and the world around them.

Welcome to Lesley. We are very glad you're here and look forward to helping you take advantage of all we have to offer!
