CLANG 3400 Say it Louder: Latinx Voices in the USA

This course focuses on contemporary cultural productions created by Latinx people in the USA. The course celebrates Latinx heritage as an empowering force that has transformed the literary, historical and cultural panorama of the USA. We will listen to poetry that has not appeared in print, but in performance and spoken word, and will explore the importance of collaborative work within different Latinx groups. We will study the heterogeneity of voices from their own unique perspectives, narratives, and styles, and will explore how Latinx artists engage the social, political, and personal while tackling misconceptions of cultural homogeneity and normativity to open a discussion about language, race, history, class, and society. We will also study narratives that delve into the Latinx Diaspora to understand the experiences of migrant people from firsthand accounting of the terror, uncertainty, and hope that marked their journeys to the USA and continue to characterize their lives. We will listen to Latinx voices because they are talking to us, loud and clear. Class is in English with the opportunity to read, speak and write in Spanish.

Before enrolling in the CLANG 3400 section, students should have two years of college Spanish or equivalent are recommended. Heritage and native speakers of Spanish are welcome without prior formal instruction.
