Master of Arts in International Higher Education Program
The Master of Arts in International Higher Education with a specialization in Intercultural Relations prepares scholar-practitioners to be successfully employed in institutions of higher education, non-profit organizations, and globally focused companies. Our graduates are hired in professional careers such as study abroad, international student advising and administration, international admission and recruitment, managing global volunteer and internship programs, promoting diversity and inclusion, and leading multicultural/intercultural student services, among many others.
Foundational courses in the curriculum emphasize the program’s niche in developing skills in intercultural relations, identity exploration, student learning and development, and enhancing inclusion. These are coupled with other core courses that focus on U.S. and global perspectives on international higher education and essential administrative tools and practices required for the field. In addition, the Applied Research course allows students to delve deeper in their academic exploration and design a research project with a line of inquiry that is relevant to professional practice.
The electives courses focus on building professional skills relevant to the contemporary international higher education context. Many of our faculty are also long-term practitioners in their fields, bringing first-hand experience and knowledge of current issues to their courses.
For those who are already working in the field and are seeking to advance their professional development, they might find other advanced electives or independent studies more relevant. Those who are new to the field can opt for an internship, either in the U.S. or abroad.
The combination of required and elective courses prepares graduates of the program with research based practical knowledge and skills for intercultural training, working with diverse constituencies, and advancing the internationalization of higher education.
Students may enroll in the 33-credit program on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students can complete all requirements in a year.
