IAHIS 1001 History of Game Design

Since the 1970s, the game industry and game arts have assumed an increasing significance within our culture.  This course examines the history of electronic games and the game industry.  More specifically, the course explores the evolution of games in terms of their design and technical innovations, economic and commercial growth, and social and political impact.  Students will analyze how programmers, designers, artists and writers have contributed to the development of electronic games and the game industry in the past five decades.  In doing so, students will acquire a deeper understanding of the complex role that electronic games and interactive media play in contemporary culture.
