Lesley’s business major allows students to learn the business acumen necessary in every profession through a blend of qualitative and quantitative perspectives. The core courses provide necessary business soft and hard skills, whether a student plans to open a proprietorship, join a partnership, seek employment in the corporate environment, or work as a sole contractor.  These skills include leadership, teamwork, time management, marketing, promotion, pricing and branding, networking, customer service, tax implications, and strategic thinking and planning.

The core courses (24 credits) provide a working knowledge of the various disciplines required in any type of business environment. Elective courses (12 credits) offer a selection of topics allowing students to either concentrate on topics necessary for employment in a large established company or to concentrate on courses oriented to individual small business goals.

Small business and proprietorship electives are oriented to individual business goals and delve into the specifics of evaluating and creating tools specific to successful proprietorships, partnerships, and sole contractors. A working knowledge of social entrepreneurship directed toward positive social change will be a core feature of the curriculum. An individual involved in this type of endeavor must have the ability to create solutions for positive societal change; the leadership to persuade others of the viability of their solutions; and the confidence and financial skills to obtain political and financial support.

Corporate electives will focus on critical thinking skills, interpersonal skills, and team collaboration, identifying ethical dilemmas, and matters of social responsibility and sustainability. Electives in finance, analytics, operations management, and service-oriented managerial accounting will offer a quantitative path.
