Elementary Teacher - Bachelor of Science
This major leads to initial licensure as an elementary teacher, grades 1–6. Students will be especially well qualified to serve as teachers in public and private elementary schools. Within the major, the student will consider the inclusive classroom at all times.
The senior practicum will be a semester experience at one level within the 1–6 grade range. Coursework in grades 1–6 gives the student experience with children of different ages and a variety of curricula, organizational studies, and grouping strategies characteristic of the elementary school.
Students in the Elementary Major must choose at least a liberal arts minor to complement their professional study.. Students may choose from one of the following liberal arts fields:
- Biology
- Creative Writing
- English
- Environmental Studies
- History
- Mathematical Studies
- Psychology

Liberal Arts Support Courses:
Additional courses are needed to meet DESE Subject Matter Knowledge Requirements. They may also meet General Education requirements. Please consult with your advisor:
Arts and Humanities: 3 Credits in American History, 3 credits in non-US History.
Social Sciences: 6 Credits in consultation with advisor and with review of the Subject Matter Knowledge Requirements.
Mathematics: Choose two 1500 level courses or above, the following courses are recommended: CMATH 1501 Problem Solving, CMATH 1515 Math, Art, and Design, CMATH 1522 introduction to Statistics, CMATH 1590 Patterns and Functions, CMATH 2140 Discrete Mathematics, or CMATH 2144 Topics in Geometry, or if prerequisites are met: CMATH 3522 Inferential Statistics.
Science: 6 credits: A Life Science course; an Earth and Environmental Science course; (at least one course should be a lab course)
